IE "incomplete" URL lockups

I need some assistance with a consistant IE lockup issue I'm experiencing.
Everytime I enter a web address into the URL bar in IE that does not include
the http:// prefix, then IE locks up. (ie. www.yahoo.com as opposed to
http://www.yahoo.com).

This happens with any web address, so it's not site specific. Also, it only
crashes the IE window that it occurs in. No other IE windows are affected.

Please help on any ways to resolve this. I am running Windows XP Tablet PC
Edition with Service Pack 2 installed. No special toolbars or add-ons have
been installed for IE either. I was going to try reinstalling IE, but it's
not listed in the Add/Remove Programs.

Thanks in advance.

Check the below Registry entries vs. yours:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\DefaultPrefix]
Default="http://"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\Prefixes]
"ftp"="ftp://"
"gopher"="gopher://"
"home"="http://"
"mosaic"="http://"
"www"="http://"

Still having problems, however I have found something new.

When I first boot up, entering a URL without the prefix works fine. However
anytime I do it afterwards, then IE will lock up.

Any other ideas?

Thanks again.

This probably won't help:

Using Regedit, browse to the following registry key and make sure the noted
setting is correct:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoComplete]
"Append Completion"="yes"

also see the following values:

"Use AutoComplete"="yes"
"AutoSuggest"="no"

Under the registry settings for
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoComplete]

The only thing that shows up is:
(Default) - REG_SZ - (value not set)

Nothing else.

Although auto-complete for my IE address bar works fine for web addresses,
which is the only auto-complete option I have enabled.

Would I need to add the other entries that you mentioned?

Thanks.

This problem describes exactly the problem I also experience with IE after I
upgraded to XP SP2 some time ago. I have tried all the suggestions from this
newsgroup from various MVPs, running all state-of-the-art cleaning programs
(Spybot, Ad-aware and so on...) in addition to running SpywareBlaster. I have
checked my registry settings as documented, but nothing helps....

So, where do I go from here? Can IE be reinstalled, or do I have to
reinstall XP?
