ie6 closes with 3rd party ext. & hosts blocked url

D

Dave

IE6 closes without warning or error notice if the URL is blocked in the
HOSTS file or if the address is misspelled. www.qksrv.net is an example of a
HOSTS blocked URL that caused my IE6 to close. When "enable third party
extensions" is unchecked, the resulting screen is "page can not be
displayed" and IE6 does not close for either a misspelled address or a
blocked URL. Changing HOSTS to NOHOSTS lets the blocked URL function;
however, the misspelled address still causes IE6 to close.

I have run Spybot S&D and HijackThis without finding any problems. The 3
BHOs found by Spybot and BHODemon are for Acrobat, Spybot, and AdShield.
BHODemon was used to disable them in various combinations without resolving
this. TT with CDilla was installed last year well before this problem
started.

The OS is winxp sp1 and IE6 is sp1 with most security updates installed.
Also, only the JIT compiler is checked. The other two Java boxes are
unchecked. When IE6 closes, the internet stays connected and OE still runs;
however, autodisconnect does not function until the next reboot. This
browser closing just started a few weeks ago. Maybe one of the IE6 security
updates caused this.

There have been a number of recent postings about this problem with out any
resolution. If anyone has any suggestions about other things to try to
resolve this I will be happy to try them.

Thanks for any help, David

I know that www.qksrv.net is a tracker and that is why the HOSTS file blocks
it. I did not enter that URL on purpose. I clicked the eBay link on my
home page and IE6 closed. After some investigation, I found that the eBay
link starts with an URL that is blocked. This closure problem has been
occurring for several weeks and this is the first time I was able to relate
to something. I thought that IE6 closing due to the HOSTS file blocking an
URL might give some clue.

Both SpyBot and HijackThis have been run a number of times and nothing has
been found. Turbo Tax and CDilla were installed last year well before this
problem started.

The question remains:

WHY DOES IE6 CLOSE WHEN A BLOCKED URL IS ACCESSED OR A MISSPELLED URL IS
ENTERED?

David

PS. An other poster mentioned this problem when clicking a link on the
American Airline site.

Sandi,

Thank you for your two answers even though they did not help. My history
was set to 10 days. I did delete it but it did not help. The ie6 closure
is not random or temperature dependent. It occurs when I type an URL that
does not exist or try to access a site that is blocked by my HOSTS file.
Other than these two time, the browser and computer work fine.

I looked KBA 811812 and I do not know enough to know if that is my problem.
The symptoms in the article do not seem the same as the ones I have
described.

I have run the file scan with no errors and re-registered the 6 DLLs that I
have seen listed in other postings. This was done before my first post.

Hi Dave,

Both instances will trigger the 'page cannot be displayed' error, or perhaps
bring up a search engine, depending on your settings. I wonder if we're
looking at a corrupt shdocvw.dll or shdoclc.dll.

I don't often recommend this, but perhaps running repair may help:
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers_5.htm#repair_tool

I would have recommended you delete the typedurl key in the registry, but
that would not come into play for links accessed that are simply blocked in
HOSTS (assuming you are using hyperlinks for said situation).

I tried to repair IE6 by using method 2 in 318378. After changing the
89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383 IsInstalled word from 1 to 0, I still
got the "Setup has ---- Setup can not continue." warning when I tried to
install IE6. I rebooted several times and got the same results even after
letting XP "cleanup my personal ie6 settings." (Which I had to reset.)

What am I doing wrong? I do not think this problem is big enough to push me
into reinstalling XP. I did rerun sfc /scannow again and did not find any
errors.

MORE INFO:

Q818529 was installed on 6/4 and this problem seemed to start about then.
The next earlier IE6 update was 4/23 and that is well before this started.
