ie6 hangs on exit - must end task to close browser

P

Pete

We have a omputer running XP/SP1 with ie6/sp1.

When an ie window is launched, and then any second or child
windows are launched, only the first window can be closed
successfully.

It can be closed by any of the standard methods for shutting windows
(i.e. ALT F4, etc.).

However, any other browser windows will not close by any method other
than using endtask.

We have:

Checked all windows updates
checked for IE addins
uninstalled/reinstalled ie6 per KB 318378
reinstalled Windows XP sp1
ran ad-aware and spybot for malware (none found)

This happens in all profiles, even a brand new one created
specifically for testing. It happens only to ie6, no other
applications are affected.

Short of re-loading XP (there is a lot of data and quite a few
applications installed, potentially making for an involved reload
process) what are our options?

Thanks,

Pete

Pete,
Try disabling (for diagnostic purposes) legitimate programs running in the
background which might be interacting with IE- security, antivirus,
ad-blockers, toolbars & other add-ons, etc.
You may have to uninstall then reinstall, or not reinstall, a program.

I've heard of a case where reinstalling Norton AV fixed this.

And, run CWShredder http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html It
removes CoolWebSearch variants better than the Ad-aware or Spybot.

Hope this helps,
Don
