No longer possible to close IE6 except via Task Manager

Frequently IE6 is impossible to close via the usual close
button or Alt/f4. It is possible to minimise the browser,
but only possible to close via the task manager end_task
option. When used, this states that the application has
stopped responding. An error report is generated and sent.
It is possible to continue using IE6, just unable to
close.
I have re-installed IE6 with no improvement.
O/S is Win XP Pro.
IE6 version 6.0.2800 SP1 + Q818529 & Q330994.
