IE6 will not load ANY page

I

Ian Ryan

Hi,

I am running Win 98 and IE6. I connect using an ISP over
a Dial-Up Connection.

When I connect and attempt to load any page (including my
homepage) my browser responds with 'The Page cannot be
found...'

I have scanned for viruses using Norton Antivirus with a
Virus Definitions file downloaded today. I have run up-to-
date Adaware and Spybot and cleaned any adware or spyware
problems.

I have downloaded/installed the latest IE6 SP and this
has not solved the problem. The strange thing is when I
open Netscape 6 it loads pages no problem so it would
seem that the problem is with IE6 settings somewhere.

Another sympton which might be relevant is that my Dial
Up Connection window pops up after Windows has loaded. It
takes 3 or 4 attempts to successfully close this unwanted
prompt to connect.

I have a Hosts file which contains only 2 entries :-

127.0.0.1 pop3.norton.antivirus
127.0.0.1 pop3.spa.norton.antivirus

Should IE6 be using one of these proxy server address. At
the moment IE6 is set to use the proxy server address of
my ISP dial-up connection which is www.proxy.indigo.ie.
When I turn off the Use a Proxy Server option in IE6 I
can load pages no problem.

Can you point me in the right direction as to what
exactly is my problem with the Proxy Server setting. I
suspect the Adaware/Spybot may have quarantined Registry
entries which are causing this behaviour but I am no
expert.

Thanks

Ian
