IE6 address bar lockup

i'm having a problem with IE6...

I have the latest updates installed and everything else
works fine.

but when i type in a web address without the 'http://' or
the 'www.' my Internet Explorer window freezes...
e.g. www.microsoft.com works, but microsoft.com causes a
lockup, and the only way i can interact with it is to
force close it.

anyone else experience this problem? and if so any ideas
how to get round it?

Other variant may be the cause.
There's a good possibility that this is being caused by a third-party
program (adware, spyware, parasite).
