IE temporarily "hung ap"

I posted this question earlier, but then was unable to get into the newsgroup
for a bit so am starting over.

Ever since upgrading to XP from ME in January I've had a problem with IE
hanging. It hangs as it loads a new site and displays "not running" in the
task manager. If I wait 4-5 minutes it will start to run again. This has
also happened once or twice with OE.

It does not hang in any pattern that I have identified. Sometimes it will
go most of a day without hanging and then hang once and be OK for a long
time. It doesn't always hang on any given site. Sometimes it will,
sometimes not on any given site. It has NEVER hung on www.crh.noaa.gov which
is a site I use at least several times a day.

I am current on all updates for XP. My system is an 866 mhz Dell with 512
mb ram and a 20 Gb HD which is about 2/3 full. no network, dial-up access.

I have worked for almost a month with Microsoft phone support with no results.

If it hangs I can close it and go to the same site Opera and everything
works OK.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Here is my reply to some questions from Kelly

I use Norton Antivirus 2005 and there are a number of startup items, but the
problem occurs with Norton uninstalled and all startups stopped with msconfig.

The problem occurs when first loading a page or changing pages within a web
site, not when downloading files.

MY OE only checks mail when I ask it to.

I have run spybot, ad aware and highjack this. Adaware and spybot found
some stuff which I removed. Hijackthis found nothing suspicious that I could
see. I also checked it with one of the analysis sites mentioned in
majorgeeks.

Other things to note:
While IE is hung there doesn't appear to be any activity in or out of my
modem. While IE is hung I can open another IE session and go to other sites
successfully.

Another anomaly is that when I disconnect from my ISP, the "connected icon"
in the tray stays on the screen for several minutes even though I am not
connected.

Sounds like a lot of well thought out troubleshooting. Here's just a
few ideas to try.
(1). Check IE's Security Zone and Advanced Option settings.
Especially the Certificate Validation options - Also check on
IE's cookie handling.
(2.) Log in to the Administrator account and complete purge the TIF
cache for your normal Day-to-Day account.
(3.) Check the BHO (Browser Helper Objects) installed to IE
C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files or use the Add-On
manager.
Sounds like something that "Hooks" into IE. It seems like you've done
most of the standard Malware checks.

Thanks for the suggestion and link. I'll follow through on it.

It is my fondest hope not to have to spend much time seeking help here.:)

I've tried all of these too. I've got everything set at the default values
right now.

I have disabled all of the add-ons to no avail.

Any other suggestions?
