Temporary "hung app"

Ever since upgrading to XP from ME in January I've had a problem with IE
hanging. It hangs as it loads a new site and displays "not running" in the
task manager. If I wait 4-5 minutes it will start to run again. This has
also happened once or twice with OE.

It does not hang in any pattern that I have identified. Sometimes it will
go most of a day without hanging and then hang once and be OK for a long
time. It doesn't always hang on any given site. Sometimes it will,
sometimes not on any given site. It has NEVER hung on www.crh.noaa.gov which
is a site I use at least several times a day.

I am current on all updates for XP. My system is an 866 mhz Dell with 512
mb ram and a 20 Gb HD which is about 2/3 full. no network, dial-up access.

I have worked for almost a month with Microsoft phone support with no results.

If it hangs I can close it and go to the same site Opera and everything
works OK.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Hi Fred,

1. What is running in the background? Firewall, Anti-Virus, etc? If so,
do they only scan while on IE or OE? Do you have a scanner checking
incoming mail? Is OE set to check mail every 5 minutes?
Does this only happen during a download from IE? Have you tried disabling
any of the formerly mentioned programs to test?

To know about what is running during a logon:

2. Is your system clean?

Run Ad-Aware SE, Spybot and HijackThis:

Note: Update the first two programs, once installed, before running.

3. Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi,

I use Norton Antivirus 2005 and there are a number of startup items, but the
problem occurs with Norton uninstalled and all startups stopped with msconfig.

The problem occurs when first loading a page or changing pages within a web
site, not when downloading files.

MY OE only checks mail when I ask it to.

I have run spybot, ad aware and highjack this. Adaware and spybot found
some stuff which I removed. Hijackthis found nothing suspicious that I could
see. I also checked it with one of the analysis sites mentioned in
majorgeeks.

Other things to note:
While IE is hung there doesn't appear to be any activity in aorout of my
modem. While IE is hung I can open another IE session and go to other sites
successfully.
