Computer hangs up in IE/Mozilla

Hello,

As of late, my computer has been hanging up altogether whenever I try
to access certain sites in Firefox or MSIE6. At first I thought it
was Mozilla, so I uninstalled it, but the same problem occurred in
Internet Explorer. I'll try and describe the process in as much
detail - if I go onto a site such as Hotmail, or Facebook the computer
usually hangs up (not just IE, but XP too) just after I've logged in
and when IE is loading my home page. So I can get to a page where a
login is required, but as soon as I log in, the computer freezes.

UPDATE:

Just after this post, my computer has done exactly the same thing when
I tried to open Soulseek, a peer-to-peer program - the program opened
but the computer froze up as soon as it got to the 'Initializing uPnP'
stage

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in
conjunction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22,
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30, or another appropriate forum for review
by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this

independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop.

Thanks for your responses, but I'm not sure if any of them will assist
me. Shortly after this, my computer basically went into meltdown -
rundll32.exe, pagefile.sys, basically the core Windows system files
all became corrupted etc etc. I rescued important files, and FDisked
windows, reinstalling Windows XP.

(Note: If it matters, I am now running XP SP2 Home, and before it was
XP Professional SP2).

The computers running fine - there's no malware on it, after I did
extensive scans after I used the internet for the first time in its
new form. But - what do you know?! Same problem. Doesn't seem to be
doing it as much in Hotmail anymore - though it did it as I tried to
load Google Groups up once, and MySpace again.

I discovered an interesting bit of information in the system log (In
Event Viewer):

Each time my computer hungup, there was an error occurring to do with
the Service Control Manager - EventID: 7000, and its description said
this:

'The Upload Manager service failed to start due to the following
error:
The account specified for this service is different from the account
specified for other services running in the same process.'

You need to check for failed hardware in your Device Manager and run Chkdsk
/f. It sounds like you may have a HD problem.

Thats what I was thinking - I ran a checkdisk and it returned the
following results, the worst being 'minor inconsistencies', no bad
sectors:

'A disk check has been scheduled.
Windows will now check the disk.
Cleaning up minor inconsistencies on the drive.
Cleaning up 742 unused index entries from index $SII of file 0x9.
Cleaning up 742 unused index entries from index $SDH of file 0x9.
Cleaning up 742 unused security descriptors.
CHKDSK discovered free space marked as allocated in the
master file table (MFT) bitmap.
Windows has made corrections to the file system.

78140128 KB total disk space.
7165776 KB in 42859 files.
11708 KB in 3584 indexes.
0 KB in bad sectors.
115504 KB in use by the system.
65536 KB occupied by the log file.
70847140 KB available on disk.

4096 bytes in each allocation unit.
19535032 total allocation units on disk.
17711785 allocation units available on disk.'

Probably a bad hd or controller. If the hd is dieing, a format and
install won't help.
