IE 8 runs slowly after leaving it a while

Kelvin

I have XP SP3 and have been using IE8 since about September. I have noticed
that if I leave it a while IE8 hangs and can take about 5 to 10 minutes to
respond. For example it took 6 or 7 attempts to close IE8 using Windows Task
Manager then 10 minutes later while in another program the "Your program is
not responding" error message comes up 7 or 8 times.

I run Norton Internet Security v8 so I am sure it is not malware or a
trojan. In all other respects I prefer IE8 to IE7 or even firefox, any
suggestions as to what it is?

Kelvin

When you're running a BETA program, what do you expect?

Yes, I can tell you exactly what *it* is. It (the IE8 you are running) is
not IE8, but a beta test version of IE8; IE8 itself doesn't exist yet. The
reason it's beta software is that it has problems that have been identified
but not fixed yet, and other problems that haven't been found yet. If there
were no problems it would be released software, not beta software.

So I have two points for you:

1. If you run beta software, you are guaranteed to have problems with it.

2. Problems can be minor and affect nothing but that piece of software or
they be major and crash the entire system, requiring you to do a clean
reinstallation of Windows. For that reason, it's foolhardy to run beta
software unless you are someone who likes playing with test versions, and
looking for problems to report, and you have a spare non-production computer
to run it on.

So my advice is that you get rid of the beta software ASAP. If you like it,
great; then look forward to when it is released.

I accept the risks involved in knowingly running beta software, just
wandered if it was a known issue.

If the issues were all known, it wouldn't be in BETA.

If you back up your system there is absolutely no reason NOT to run BETA
software.

I backup my system OBSESSIVELY... but most folks don't even know how
to do it.

Best overall advice is to stay away from beta software.

Visit the group that discusses the beta version of IE. To use
Microsoft's webnews-for-dummies interface (which demands that scripting
be enabled) to visit the Internet Explorer beta group, go to:

http://www.microsoft.com/communitie...spx?dg=microsoft.public.internetexplorer.beta

A much better solution is to use a newsreader (e.g., Outlook Express,
Thunderbird, Forte Agent, 40tude Dialog, XanaNews, Xnews). If you do
not have or do not want to use your own NNTP (Network News Transfer
Protocol) server, connect your newsreader to:

msnews.microsoft.com

Then go visit the Internet Explorer *BETA* group at:

microsoft.public.internetexplorer.beta

That is poor advice since you cannot learn. Learn how to use backup and
THEN run any BETA program you wish

Let's not fight over this. We're neighbors - I live in the city, you
live in the 'burbs.

Besides, I'm right.

Running Norton is far worse than running a Microsoft BETA program.

I disagree again. Norton is the worst choice of anti-virus software, but
it's not as dangerous as beta software.

Baloney. How many BETA programs have problems? Certainly not all of them.
How does one learn if he
never puts his toe in the water. Backup and then run.

Certainly you jest. Why do you have such a fear of BETA programs?
In reality one may consider all virus programs as BETA since they were never
sent to Microsoft and
tested against all combinations of Windows installations. Yes it was
released by the developer, Norton
for example, and that is why it no longer is BETA???????? Gimme a break.

Baloney. How many BETA programs have problems? Certainly not all of them.

On the contrary--certainly all of them. Beta versions of programs are test
versions. The reason they are test versions. and not released versions is
that they are known to have some problems and thatthey are released to the
public to find the other problems that haven't been identified yet.

How does one learn if he
never puts his toe in the water. Backup and then run.

Once again, I completely disagree.
