IE 8 ProblemS

I posted this in another location, but think it would be better here:

I upgraded to IE8 (I'm running XP Professional SP3) when I logged on the
first time I got an error message about drive incompatibility: (here's the
general idea, I believe)
Internet Explorer 8 RC1 displays a compatibility warning when certain
versions of the Drive Letter Access (DLA) add-in are installed. This issue
occurs because Internet Explorer 8 RC1 and specific versions of this add-in
are incompatible, and the installation is unstable. When you disable this
add-in, the main functionality of the DLA product is unaffected.
When I tried to report/fix the problem it took me to the online help site
and instructed me to start without "something- and the specifics I can
remember nor can I find again online", but that should fix the problem. It
didn't.

Eventually I restored to yesterday when Explorer 7 was working fine. It
seems whatever setting I changed remained changed and not only can I not use
Explorer - it appears to run, opens up to start loading the home MSN page,
but then closes! Then when I try to reset my internet settings from the
control panel that won't even open up.

I did read the release notes for IE8 and disabled the add-on for DLA.

I un-installed and reinstalled IE7 with no change. I also downloaded and
ran the Fix-it to reset the IE settings and also tried the reset feature
from the control panel (inetcpl.cpl). Neither had an affect.

Suggestions for a fix or where to get help? Thanks

Those with IE7- and/or IE8-specific questions or comments can post to and
seek support in IE General newsgroup:
microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general

On the web:http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg...

In your newsreader:

I went to the link you provided and was very confusing versus this
site. I recieved an email to upgrade to IE8 but declined as Microsoft
doesn't send emails and was probably a phlishing attempt. I also
thought IE8 was still in the Beta stage and not ready, otherwise
wouldn't I be notified with Microsoft updates that it was ready to
install? From the little I've read on here and the other site it seems
it still has problems.

The links I posted open IE General newsgroup via the web-interface (link #1)
or your newsreader (link #2). Keep in mind that users who are NOT having
problems don't tend to post to newsgroups.

MS does NOT send such emails. However, if you have a beta build of IE8
installed, Windows Update will offer IE8 Final (which was released on 19
Mar-09). In a few months, Windows Update will be offering IE8 Final to all
WinXP SP2/SP3 and Vista users, but only as High Priority update which will
not install without your explicit approval.

Internet Explorer 8 Delivery through Automatic Updates
<QP>
Automatic Updates will notify all such users (including those with Automatic
Updates configured to automatically download and install updates) when
Internet Explorer 8 has been downloaded and is ready to install. The
notification and installation process will not start unless and until a user
who is a local administrator logs on to the machine. Users who are not local
administrators will not be prompted to install the update and will thus
continue using Internet Explorer 6 or Internet Explorer 7.

Been running IE8 since February and haven't had a single problem. After the
official release I deleted IE8 and downloaded and installed the released
version. No problems.

Repeatedly crashes here so I uninstalled it. Later installed it again
and disabled the add-ons. No help. It's GONE.

I don't need it anyway: Firefox is great and with the add-ons
(especially Tab-Plus), IE8 isn't competitive IMO.

From previous posts, I think I understand that MS does NOT send email
messages about upgrading to IE8? And this was a phishing attempt? If it was,
it was successful. I am copying the email I received. :

Nope, that one was a legit message sent to all Hotmail users. Yes, I found
it a tad misleading, too: You do NOT have to install the MSN-customized
version of IE8 unless you want to.

Thanks you for the information. Now I just have to figure out how to get my
IE - some version working again.

I have replied to your post in IE General newsgroup. Please post any/all
