IE 7 install breaks system!

I tried to install yesterday's Microsoft Update download of IE7 over IE7
beta 3. The beta uninstall hangs, causing my system to become unusable.
Attempting (on another machine) to remove IE7 beta 3 through Add/Remove
programs also hangs. Apparently, it is not possible to get back to IE6 from
IE7 beta 3 to redo the install over that. Any else have this problem?

Mike,

Do have have any anti-virus or keylogging programs running during the
uninstall?

Thanks for reading my post. I had NAV running during the install attempt
and, when it hung during the IE7 beta uninstall I tried the uninstall
through Add/Remove programs on another machine without AV running. Same
result, unfortunately.

Thanks for the input. A few of us are working on the problem and this will
be part of the mix. Will post back here when we have a solution.

Good advice to stop AVs before installing - as long as you pull out your
internet connection before doing so. Of course, that makes it somewhat
difficult to access Microsoft Update (which does automatic installs) to get
IE7 in first place ....

No need to disconnect from the internet if you have a firewall.

There should no longer be a need to disable anti-virus software when
installing a program...in theory, at least. Today's AV software should
be able to recognize legitimate program installs. Nevertheless, it still
happens that an antivirus program will sometimes interfere with a major
change to Windows, and IE7 is really an upgrade to Windows. So the
advice to disable anti-virus and anti-spyware programs running in the
background remains.

After much research, the following worked for me.

1. Uninstall MSXML4.0 SP2 Security update 925672 using Add/Remove programs

2. Uninstall IE7 Beta 3 using Add/Remove programs. This will get you back to
IE6.

3. Download IE7 from www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx and install
it.

4. Run IE7

5. Reinstall MSXML4.0 SP2 through Microsoft Update.

The issue seems to be something to do with the DirectX components of
MSXML4.0

Regards

Mike
