Icons in Notifical Area of Task Bar

I'm almost embarrassed to ask this question; but, it is vital to removing USB
Hardware. Several icons have "disappeared" from the Notification Area of my
Task Bar -- including volume, and the "safely remove hardware" arrow. I've
tried several times, following exactly the instructions in the "Help and
Support" index to put them back, but it does not work. Sometimes I can right
click on the hardware in Windows Explorer (file manager) and it will offer me
the option to "eject." I click it, then pull out the USB connector, but am
never sure it is "safe."

This is probably some very stupid thing I've done, and some very easily
fixed situation, but I *cannot* figure out how to fix it -- after many hours
over many days of trying. Any suggestions will be apprecaited.
(P.S. -- I tried posting this question before -- somewhere, but was never
able to find it again, so please excuse any duplication.)

Right click on a blank area of the Windows toolbar | Properties | Customize.
You have three choices for the icons. Always Show. Always Hide. And, Hide
When Inactive. Choose your weapon.

Bruce: Thank you for responding. I've done that, and it has not worked.
The "Customize Notifications" dialog box has two sections: "Current," and
"Past." Both the volume and the "safely remove..." are both in the "Past"
section, and they are represented by "folders" not their normal icons. I
have chosen "Always Show" on both -- and done this several times, including
restarting my computer. It does not work. I have some feeling that it has
to do with both the "Past" listing and the "Folder" icon, but I have no real
idea what it means.

i would agree from what i have seenm when a program is listed in "past" it
is because it is un-installed. altho i have tryed several time to get rid of
that annoying "safely remove...."
so if you recall how you did to make it go away plz tell me ;)

You want to get rid of it, and I desperately want it back! I have no idea
how or why the "safely remove.." arrow icon disappeared -- nor the volume
icon. But I *know* that the volume control is still functional because I
can activate it from other places. I don't know how to re-activate the
"safely remove..." icon. If I could tell you, I'm not sure you should even
do it!

Try the Restore Defaults option.

For Safely Remove Hardware Icon:

Start>Run then enter:

RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll

OK.

Volume Control icon:

Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices. There should be a box to tick to
enable volume icon to be shown in taskbar.

The "safely remove" only comes up when you have a USB device plugged in like
a Flash drive or external USB hard drive or cd-drive etc (applies to any
other removable mass-storage device, including things like digital camera or
Mp3 player.)

Thanks to Bruce and Andrew. Everything I have plugged into my computer is
via USB ports, so to have that arrow gone from the notificaiton task area is
dangerous.

But THANK YOU SMIRNOFF !! Your suggestion worked like a charm, not only
replacing the icon, but offering me the list to choose from when I need to
remove a connection -- such as a jump stick. I would never have discovered
that without your help, and I need to let the world know: IF YOU HAVE MY
PROBLEM, FOLLOW SMIRNOFF'S SUGGESTIONS TO ME. (And that is not *necessarily*
from the bottle!) :))
