i have looked on my internet connections, under the heading broadband it
has`my isp`and under my dial up it has `speedtouch`i do use speedtouch and
that is set as my default, but i am also a broadband user.how do i swap this
about so i have `speedtouch`under broadband?as far as i can see i am not
dialling up,as i have checked my phone bill.does this matter that this is
stated wrong,as long as i am using broadband and not paying extra for online
access.but if i could can i change this over so it says `speedtouch`under the
heading broadband@

Are you getting the broadband performance? If so, who cares what it says?

Are you, perhaps, getting your broadband through a LAN connection - i.e.
the DSL/Cable modem is physically connected to a router or another
computer, not directly to your computer? In that case, your broadband
access is through the network connection, not using the dialup - but you
may still have the old dial-up connection set.

I am having a similar problem: I am using XP Home, and my internet connection
shows that the LAN is at 100 mbps, and the Broadband is at 400mbps. I am
trying to figure out which one is ACTUALLY running! I have a Motorola
SURFboard SBG900... which is capable of attaining up to 500mbps, but when I
go online, it sure doesn't SEEM like it! Also, in the display icons on the
lower side of the screen, the LAN connection "monitor icons" flash, while the
Broadband, icons do not! What gives? Which connection am I REALLY using??

How are you connecting to the surfboard? Ethernet, USB, or wireless?

The Surfboard cable modem will be connecting to the internet at one speed,
and to your PC at another entirely different speed.

Between the cable modem and your ISP, the maximum rate downstream rate is
38mbps, but your ISP may not be providing anything near that.

Betweeen the modem and your PC, if you're using Ethernet, the port speed is
100 mbps. USB may be higher, and wireless will be lower (54mbps max).

Those speeds are really meaningless, though, because what you are actually
asking about is the rate you wind up with between your PC and your ISP. If
you've got a normal fast connection, it will be under 10mbps.

So which are you using? If you're connected to a cable modem, that
doesn't require login, you're probably using the adapter connection, not
the "broadband" connection.

If you want to be sure which one is actually in use, open the Control
Panel/ Network Connections window. Right click on one and choose "disable".
Then, open a browser window. If you have a connection, the other
connection is active. Go back, re-enable it, and disable the other. Try
the browser again. It is possible to have both active at once, but there
isn't really any benefit.

Hmmm... apparently, when I disable the LAN connection, I lose Internet access, even though my Broadband connection is enabled. And yes, I connect via Ethernet, which shows a speed of 400mpbs while the LAN shows 100mpbs. Evidently, the LAN is the one that is active, but this was not always the case. Regardless of the LAN connection, I used to acheive speeds greater than 100mbps with the other Motorola SurfBoard cable modem I had, but with THIS one... which also features the "wireless" capability for my laptop (which DOES hit about 54mbps) only the LAN connection on my PC seems to work, NOT the actual broadband connection! This is starting to get... fustrating!!
