Windows Mail stuck with dial-up problem

The thread "Windows Mail" in this forum seems to be the same problem that I
have, but is "upgrading" to Windows Live Mail" really the only available
solution??
A new Vista computer was set up with broadband using a USB Speedtouch modem
which uses a Dialup connection. Email with WM and IE7 were set up and working
fine.
Today I recovered the Speedtouch modem and setup a Netgear ADSL modem/router
and got internet access and IE7 working OK. However, although the dial up
connection has been removed from the computer, Windows Mail still insists on
trying to use it. Hence email is not working. If your open Internet Options,
Connexions tab from IE7 or Control Panel, all setting are correct (no dial up
mentioned) but clicking the Connexions tab from Windows Mail freezes the appl.
If this is an issue with WM, is there likely to be a fix for it soon?

The symptom of Windows Mail freezing when going to the
Connection tab is often caused by running an incompatible
antivirus. Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee
and Norton security programs. Those will need to be
uninstalled, not just disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see

Thanks Gary
The antivirus on this machine is Bulldog, not either of the ones you
mention. It's a friend's computer and he has just paid for a long
subscription. I will disable it and try again to access the Connections tab.
Having read some other threads where people are reporting this problem I was
going to delete the email accounts and set them up again.
I will report back.

Sorry! The Antivirus software on my friends computer is called Bullguard, not
Bulldog.
Neither disabling the email spam filter or shutting down the whole program
enabled Windows Mail to drop its attachment to the old dial up connection and
realise that the LAN was now the way to go. I didn't want to uninstall it
altogether as I thought that deleting and recreating the accounts might be
more successful.

There were two email accounts set up, one for the old pre-broadband dial up
ISP and the other being the Broadband ISP. Strangely, as soon as the new
Broadband email account was deleted, WM downloaded the mail from the old
ISP's server. After recreating the Broadband ISP email account that worked
fine too and the problem was solved.

Good to hear you got it resolved. Deleting and recreating a
problematic account will often clear things up.
