I have a serious DVD playback problem!

I am trying to watch professionally recorded DVD's on my computer. I am not
sure what has changed but recently, this does not work. I am using DVD's
that I have successfully watched on this same machine in the last couple of
weeks. Starting about two days ago, when I try to play DVD's, periodically
(every 5-30 seconds) it will randomly fast forward several seconds, sometimes
up to a minute, and then continue playback as normal. This happens when
using Dell Media Experience, Windows Media Player, or Interactual Player (the
only DVD playing programs I have installed). I have two drives for DVD. One
is a DVD-Rom Drive. The other is a DVD-R drive. I have been using the DVD-R
drive to play back DVD's. I just swaped the DVD with my game disc. In my
main drive it seems to play fine.

Are all the Media players up to date ? On the DVD-R drive have you
select the Region code or is it set to "Not Selected". Finally, how are
these two drives connected to the PC (Primary/Secondary-M/S). If
they share an IDE channel, I've seen some unusual operation using that
connection style. You might want to check you Application & System
Event logs to see if either drive has experienced any read errors. After
a number of errors the operating mode may drop back from UDMA 2
to PIO and this could account for abnormal playback.

Newer games are on DVD's,older or less graphicly intense games are on CD's
is this game disc on a DVD or CD? since a DVD drive can read both formats
but it uses different lasers to read, it could be something as simple as a
dirty lens.
