i don't want sound! mute button not helping!

On my work computer (Win XP pro), we have a little timer program that ticks
like a clock when I use it. The sound is very annoying and I would love help
stopping it. There are no sound options in the program at all. I have tried
using the mute button (which mutes all others sounds but this one), and
disabling the sound card. Nothing works! (And yes, I have to use the
program.) My company's IT dept has no clue why the sound is still occuring.
HELP!

This works on my computer:
Double-click on the sound icon in the system tray.
On the Play Control, click on options and select Advanced Controls
Click on the Advanced button.
In the Other Controls section, select "1 Digital Output Only"
Click on the Close button.
Close or minimize the Play Control.
That should do it.
