i don't want sound!

On my work computer (Win XP pro), we have a little timer program that ticks
like a clock when I use it. The sound is very annoying and I would love help
stopping it. There are no sound options in the program at all. I have tried
using the mute button (which mutes all others sounds but this one), and
disabling the sound card. Nothing works! (And yes, I have to use the
program.) My company's IT dept has no clue why the sound is still occuring.
HELP!

It's probably using the System speaker and not the sound from your sound
card/external speaker. See if you can disable the system sounds in your
BIOS.

If the motherboard has a speaker, it could be the source of the sound.
I'm not sure how you disable one though. You might have to open the
case and pull a wire from the mobo.

Sage Carpe Diem Tracker. I don't have speakers plugged in; the sound is
coming from the laptop speakers in the case.

Don't. If your memory is going bad, for example, you *will* want to hear
those system speaker beeps. Get rid of the timer program.

in the registry:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Sound]
"Beep"="No"

When you reboot your computer, look for Set Up. It's usually F2 or Del.
This has to be pressed before the beep. Heh. In the BIOS, look around
and see if you have anything regarding sound and post back before
changing anything. Or, if you don't feel comfortable in the BIOS, ask
your IT department to give it a whirl.

I wouldn't try it with a laptop unless it was easily accessible from the
battery compartment, or other removable items. If I'd realized you were
referring to a laptop, I wouldn't have suggest this.

The BIOS usually has a setting to turn off the system speaker. Depends on
your BIOS.

ok i checked the BIOS. there wasn't a setting for system sound specifically.
the closest thing was under the menu "alarm" where you could enable/disable
the power-on beep and the low battery beep. i disabled them both just to see
if it would help, but it didn't :(

found it, no sound setting. all it had was a disable/enable option for the
power-on beep and the low battery beep.
