Always mute sound on bootup

How do I always mute sound on bootup?

I use my WinXP laptop at meetings and the sound on bootup can be very
annoying. And since it is during the bootup the volume control does not
work at that point.

I know I can mute sound and then the next time the computer boots it
will be muted. But the problem is if I unmute the sound, say to play a
video, and then forget to mute it again before I shutdown. The next
time it boots I get the bootup music again and it is loud.

If there are 30 people in a meeting or class with laptops there will
frequently be at least one who's computer plays that sound on bootup!!

So: What setting or registry change will automaticly set the sound to
mute on bootup EVERY time?

Thanks

Control Panel / Sounds, then select "No Sounds".

Change the WinXP "Start Windows" sound to (None)
All of your other sounds will work but that will save you the
embarrassment when you start your computer in a crowded room.

First go to Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Sounds tab.

Scroll down to "Start Windows" then press the down button where you
see "Windows XP Startup.wav" highlighted. Scroll up to the very top of
the sound choices and select (None).
Click OK then you'll be asked to save your choice.
