My Windows XP makes no sound

I use to have good sound on my XP Windows computer.
I recently formated the system disk and re installed windows.
At first I had no sound but as I kept installing windows updates I eventally
got sound such as the booting sound.

Then it got so that when I booted the sound would start and then stop
abruptly as if some service or something started and killed it.

I kept adding upgrades hoping it would get better but instead it is now
completly mute.

I do have the little loudspeaker symbol in the motificaton area but turning
up the volume does nothing.

Can you help?

CW, if you formatted and reinstalled WinXP you might have to reinstall
the Audio Driver/s. If your computer came with a Software CD then you will
find the necessary drivers there. If not, post back here the make and model
of your computer. I will
try to help you. Also, go to Control Panel>Sound and Audio Devices. Open
and check to make sure that no Mute boxes are
checked.

I tried that and the installation hangs.
Went to DELL and the same thing happened - I think it was the same file.
If not, post back here the make and model
SB Audigy 2
I down loaded
SBA2 PCWDR LB 1 84 55-R1.exe
but when I ran it it said I already had the latest driver.

of your computer. I will try to help you. Also, go to Control Panel>Sound
and Audio Devices.
Reports Creative SB Audigy 2 [WM]

Tried but can;t Roll Back nor Update because there are no other drvers.

Thanks

Ok, rt click MyComputer>select Properties>Hardware>Device
Manager>Sound, Video and Game Controllers>select the Audio Controller and
choose Uninstall. Any Yellow marks next to any of the devices??? If yes,
drivers were not installed properly. After
uninstalling the audio controller restart and let XP reload the driver.
Then you can try reinstalling the SB driver you got from Dell.

Before I read your note below I did the following;
Did an uninstall and restart- no sound at all.
Did an uninstall and then did a Add Hardware
got sound and tried a couple of apps all had sound.
Did a restart
heard the sound going down
heard the sound coming up
Clicked my icon and got
Load personal ...
No sound when the same apps were run.
Have loudspeaker icon in lower right of screen.
Show volune OK and no mute.

Any clue there?

Thanks

CW, when you mentioned upgrades did you reinstall SP2 and/or SP3? Did
you see any yellow marks next to any of the devices
in Device Manager>Sound, Video and Game Controllers? Are you the only
user? Try creating a new user and see if the sound
works Ok. From what you said you uninstalled the SB Audio Controller
but did not restart at that time. You did use Add Hardware and it
reinstalled the SBAC and you had sound until you restarted. Try
uninstalling the SBAC , restart then use Add Hardware if Xp does not find
it first.

In Device Manager/Sound,video and game controllers/Creative...
I can right click and update driver for example.
Or I can right click Propertiex/Driver/UpdateDriver

Do those two sequences do the same thing?

Thanks

I do have it working but I don't realy know which of the many things I did
fixed it.
