Windows' Sound Volume Setting Not Sticking After Reboot

I'm running MCE2005 (WinXP Pro) on an ASUS P5B-e MB with on-board sound by
Analog
Devices. For the past few days, when I re-boot the system, the Windows
startup sound abruptly cuts out partway through the logon sequence and the
volume control shows the 'Wave' volume is at zero. I reset the volume to max
but when I re-boot again the volume is back to zero again. Is there a
registry entry that could be causing this to happen?

One or more options/settings in an ever-growing number of third-party
applications may be disallowing the change(s) from "sticking". These include
but are not limited to Ad-aware Pro's Ad-Watch, Spybot Tea Timer,
SpywareBlaster, SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor, CounterSpy, Norton AntiVirus,
McAfee VirusScan and/or Antispyware, NOD32, many other anti-virus
applications, and Zone Alarm (Free, Pro, & Security Suite).

The only virii scanner I'm using is AVG Free. I tried shutting it down,
resetting the sound levels and rebooting. No change. Any other thoughts?

Ad-Aware AE or an earlier version? It includes real-time protections that
may be in play here.

Nope. I'm running Ad-Aware 2008 Free v7.1.0.12 (not the 'Aniversary
Edition').

I know. I'm not running any other resident anti-anything programs. I use
AD-Aware (the free version) on-demand for spyware, so that's not a
problem. For my firewall I use windows built-in one (as well as my
hardware based router firewall). Any other suggestions?

I think I've tried that before for a different problem. In any event, I've
run it again and the Wave volume level still refuses to stick... any other
ideas?

Disable Ad-Aware's Guard Service via services.msc?

That service is not in the list. Although you gave me an idea. AVG8 is
running 2 services which I will disable and try again. I'll report back my
findings tomorrow.

Nah, neither of them are doing it.

That was a REAL stretch... :)
I've since dicovered that it's only the Wave volume setting that is not
retaining the last setting when booting up. The machine this is happening on
is lightly loaded with software (no Office, Photo editing, or other add-ons)
because it's my main media center/content server (BT keyboard and mouse,
nVidia 7950 GT 512 MB video, 4 NTSC and 2 ATSC tuners, 3 500 GB - 2 in RAID0
HDs). I'm still going to track it down, but for the moment it's not a big
deal. MCE2005 uses the master volume to adjust sound level and Media Player
doesn't use the volume controls at all (though the master volume setting
does affect Media Player overall level).
Thanks for the help.
