WAV audio volume stting keeps resetting to low setting

Ron Hirsch

In my main machine, which uses the Realtek ac97 on board studio, the WAV
volume setting keeps dropping to a low level.

When I bring up the volume control window, which show the 6 settings, I can
reset the WAV volume to max. But shortly after, something resets the volume
to a very low setting, and I have to bring it up to max again.

I have all the setting in this window set at max, but the WAV doesn't want
to stay there. I can't figure out what keeps setting it back to a low value.

Anyone have any ideas?

Usually it's a program that has it's own built-in volume control/slider.
Things like Media Player, QuickTime, iTunes...that may be overriding
the Windows mixer setting.

Set the Windows mixer and then one at a time open your media
players and note each one's individual volume control. Close the app
and then re-check the Windows mixer.

Thanks for the reply. I agree that it may well be a media player of some
type that "takes over". I had tried opening and closing Windows Media
Player, and VLC which is my universal player for almost everything, but I
saw nothing happenning there.

Possibly, it is some "player" on an IE site or the like. I'll just try and
pay close attention to what was run when I next see this happen.

Obviously this is not a real "problem", but just a nuisance.

I can recall the same thing happenning on my prior machine, which would
certainly seem to indicate that it is an "external" cause.

Try setting the master volume to max then the wave volume as you wish. If
you don't have a master volume channel add it via options/properties.

My master volume has always been set at maximum. And I just looked at the
master window again, and the volume was set way down. But I haven't used any
media player software since I last looked at the volume settings - very
strange indeed.

Check your Control Panel ( Classic View ). Most all of the Audio driver
packages also installs a control applet. For my PC, I have an IDT Audio
control. Use this to set levels and monitor/check levels after a bit of use.

I neglected to include the word "WAV", when I said the volume was way down
again.

I just figured out how to fix this problem. (at least what was causing
my machine to do this)
I use media player classic and this is the application that was
causing it for me.
In the settings for media player classic I went to internal filters
and then "audio switcher".
There was a box checked called "regain volume". After un-checking it
and re-starting the program, the wav volume stayed in place when
opening the media player. I only tried this because I read the post
above. Thanks for the help guys.

This sort of thing seems to be recurring more often these days: someone
reposts an ancient post (in this case over 4 years old, though I've seen
much older), *without adding anything*.

Does anyone know what the cause is?

I cant tell you the cause of the old messages getting replied to, nor
can I answer the original question, because I've had this exact same
problem on Win98 for years. It's one of those things I've just gotten
used to. I dont normally have the sound (speakers) turned on, because
all those dings and dongs and other noises from Windows annoy me. Yea,
I know most of them can be turned off in the settings, but somehow one
or more still manage to scare the s**t out of me, because I dont expect
them. Anyhow, I turn on the sound when I want to listen to music or
watch videos, and 9 times out of 10, I have to reset the volume
controls, which somehow manage to lower themselves. It's one of those
annoyances that I've just learned to live with. But it sure would be
nice to know why!

The NSA knows.

But they're not saying.

I will throw in some bonus links, to add to the mystery. From
roughly the same date as the thread in question, but totally
unrelated to it.

The person in that thread, is posting to the microsoft server.
Not related to Gmail at all.

Almost like someone extracted the name of the person in question,
and made up a fake Gmail address with it.

It's too bad the Google Groper search engine is broken,
because I could have had a lot more fun with this, if it
worked.

You can turn _all_ of them off (but still have the sound on for when you
want to listen to music or a video), by selecting the "<None>" sound
scheme. (Saving your current set of settings - if you want to, which you
may well not - when it prompts you which it will if you've changed any.)

Some - possibly many - things that play sounds (media and video players)
have their own slider; in some this is independent of the main system
one (i. e. the two are multiplied), in some it isn't. They often come up
with the slider at either some midpoint or at where it was last time you
used them; for the ones where their slider is just a redrawing of the
main one, this will affect the setting of the main one. But I'm sure
that's not the whole story!

I don't even use words like 'environment'. People live in /the world/. The
'environment' is the kind of place where people wear 'apparel' instead of
clothes. - Billy Connolly, in Radio Times, 14-20 February 2009
