Sound Volume

My sound volume doesn't control the speakers, it only
beeps through the pc-speaker inside the computer! The
volume won't increase or decrease. The slide for pc-
speaker on the larger volume control doesn't do anything.
I have sound, but not all sound, and no volume control.

I've tried reloading the drivers, disabling the internal
sound in bios, and loading the drivers so windows doesn't
load it's own first.
I loaded XP when 98 was on my "C" drive, and it
installed automatically to my 6-gig "D". The sound was
fine then, but I had to wipe XP out and un-plug
drive "D". Then the Maxtor dynamic drive overlay crashed!
Good thing I could change the sector # in bios. Re-
installed XP... needed a new activation#! Now I can't
control my volume.

I'm sure that if I format drive "C" and re-install XP
again everything will be fine, but I'm afraid I won't be
able to activate it anymore. I thought all my windows98
stuff would be transfered with the new install, but I had
to re-install everything and windows98 is still on there.
I can't boot to windows98 to uninstall norton systemworks
so that it will install to XP either.

It seeks dirve A & B four times each when it starts
too. How do you get it to stop that?

...and how can you get explorer to open on drive "C"
with the tree exposed and not auto-expand when you click
on a directory? Never had that problem with 98!
