hyperlinks don't work

H

Hugh Abbott

I have disabled my hyperlinks! What an idiot! And I can't
get them working again!

I design websites, so I had Netscape so I could test all
my sites. Yesterday I uninstalled Netscape - and then
hyperlinks that are contained within Outlook / Word /
Excel did not work.

When I clicked on a link a dialogue box asked to associate
the link with an exe file. I used the browse box to
search for Internet Explorer - and wait for it, I clicked
on Windows Explorer by mistake! Now each time I click on
a hyperlink I get an error message!

I assume I have to go into the registry to re-associate
hyperlinks with Internet Explorer - but I don't know how
to do this.

All help would be greatly received.

From a command prompt;
assoc .url
should return with
..url=InternetShortcut
If not
assoc .url=InternetShortcut
to restore the file type association.

ftype internetshortcut
should return with
internetshortcut=rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %l
If not
ftype internetshortcut=rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %l
to restore the default "Open" action.

The problem sounds a bit like what I am getting after I
installed W2000 SP4 and then the latest security fix. I do
get the links from within the browser, but I can't gollow
links from Outlook 2000 (or other software that normally
allowed links to internet pages).

I also can not longer download via an FTP site from within
the browser.

I checked the commands you suggested and they look ok.

You didn't mention what happens when you try. For the outlook problem best
to ask in an outlook group.

Check advice given me in the Office/Outlook/Interop group
on 7/15 regarding "Links blocked after W2kSP4" My
symptoms sound closer to yours; per advice given in the
referenced articles there, reseting the Web settings
restored the corrupted/missing keys, restoring operation.
