hp psc 500 driver for scanner

hi, i will get to it. the printer seems to work, although the ink is shot.
i had this printer/scanner working back in the day. the driver installation
disc when i try it says

instillation is not currently supported for windows 2000.
please check your documentation for details.

i don't have any documentation. only the unit and disc. i am trying to get
the scanner to work and don't want to mess my system up. i went to the hp
website and the update/patches don't work. says i already got em'. please
help.
if there is any additional info, i'm sure i missed that is crucial, let me
know. thank you.

Open your Control Panel and click on the "Add Hardware" icon.
The "Add Hardware Wizard" will appear.

1. Click on Next and place a dot next to "Yes, I have already connected the hardware".
2. Click Next and scroll all the way down to "Add a new hardware device".
3. Click once to highlight it and click Next.
4. Place a dot next to "Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced)".
5. Click Next and scroll down to "Printers", click once to highlight and click Next.
6. Place a dot next to "Use the following port" and click Next.
7. In the "Install Printer Software Screen", on the left side scroll down to "HP"
and click once to highlight, then on the right-side scroll down to
"HP PSC 500", click on it to highlight and click Next to install the drivers.

at the end of the instructions it says

use existing driver or replace. i picked use existing and that didnt work.
now i picked replace now says (copy 2) and still no go. the printer seems to
work properly, like i stated, but same problem persists

if you can please help
