HP printer problems

HELP!! I was on the phone with HP 2 hrs today and they could not help me.
They told me that I must have a system problem...
I have a new HP 6540 deskjet... I cannot install it all the way. I can get
it to the point where my system gives me an error message:
It cannot install the hardware. "The Printer name is invalid... "
I have installed and uninstalled added default printers, and downloaded
drivers to my system and tried to add them instead of using the disk that
came with the printer.....

Anyone else had this problem??? PLEASE let me know what to do..

I am running Win XP HE. I have not had a printer connected for a long time.
I have had one connected before.. I just bought this printer and have not
been able to get it working. The printer prints fine based on a test that H
P did with me today without having the page print from my computer.

Try completely removing the printer driver by following these
instructions from MS MVP Cari:
http://www.coribright.com/windows/Article_One.htm

If things still don't work, try the directions from MS MVP Bruce
Sanderson (which are the same for the first few steps, and then dig a
bit deeper): http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/CleanPrinterDrivers.htm

Whichever cleaning method you use, be sure to follow Cari's advice about
re-installing; most especially, don't connect the printer until the s/w
asks for it.

Thanks for your recommendations...
I tried both of those fixes and neither of them work... I think I have done most everything that I can... I continually get the same response from my system.

"cannot install this hardware."
There was a problem installing this hardware:
HP Deskjet 6500 Series

An error occured during installation of the device
"the printer name is invalid."

My system seems to install all the files as well as the driver but it seems
as something is keeping my system from sending the test to the printer.. the
printer icon will appear on my task bar and there will be a page in process
but the page does not go to the printer. Is there a different kind of USB
cable that I might try??? at this point i am desparate for anything that I
have not tried already. I did use a different USB cab. I used one from a
different printer on a different comp and It would not work either.

Any help is greatly appreciated before I have to take my system to the
nearest computer store for helppppppppp
