HP network printer fails after a couple of prints

I have installed a HP 1500N network printer on my very small workgroup
( 6 pcs all running winxp sp2 ) and in accordance with the
instructions, I installed it using USB onto one machine in the lan and
then set it up as a network printer. I connected it via a RJ45 cable
to the network switch and I gave it an IP address in the correct
subnet. I can ping it and print out from each machine but with one
annoying problem.
After I print out once or sometimes twice from any pc, when I try to
print out again from another machine it fails.I have to reboot the
printer and sometimes the pc before trying again.
Then another couple of test prints and it fails again . By fail I mean
that the print job ( a test print ) gets stuck in the queue and I have
to cancel it from the pc and often restart the printer to make it work
again.
Is there some setting on the network I must make in order to stop this
problem ?
Is it a network setting causing a jam situation when I Try to print
out from differeent machines ?
FYI - When the print jobs stick I can still ping the printer.

Normally you don't install network printers with the USB drivers first and
then attach it to the network. The procedure is to:

1. Set up the printer and attach it to the network. It will grab an IP
address if you're doing DHCP (which you probably get from your router).
Refer to the printer manual to see how to get it to spit out a Settings
page. Do this so you can see what IP address it got. Then open up a browser
on any of the network-connected computers and go to the printer's IP
address. This should get you into its configuration utility where you can
set a static IP. Or you can do this directly from the printer menu buttons
on some printers.

2. Now install the drivers on each computer that will use the printer. Do
*not* install USB drivers. HP printers give you two choices and you want
the network choice.

With a lot of HP printers, you don't need to uninstall them to correct the
mistake. Simply put the printer CD (or download drivers if you want newest
ones) and run the installation routine. You will be given a choice of
installing an additional printer. This is what you want. Don't worry, you
won't wind up with two of the same printer; you'll just get the computers
to look in the right place for the printer (network, not USB).

Most USB printer that have an Ethernet RJ-45 jack can not have both
connected at the same time. You must only use ONE.

Why ask here? This has nothing to do with the OS.

Ask elsewhere

Indeed, you should ask in a hardware newsgroup. As this is a hardware
newsgroup, you could just ignore the resident ****wit.
