HP K550 firmware error - help ?

Hit a problem with a printer I bought recently.. It's second hand and in
truth if it doesn't work I won't be unduly upset but if anyone has some
tips I'd appreciate them.

In a nutshell the problem is that the printer appears to have been badly
treated by its previous owner.

Symptoms are:
=============

When powering up printer goes through normal startup routine with
cleaning, etc.. and then after about 3 minutes it stops with power and
resume lights blinking.

Errors indicate paper or printhead block jam (none of which are valid)

However after pressing cancel for 2 seconds the printer clears the error
and will print fine.

Printing off of a configuration page shows that the firmware has an error..

Reflashing of the firmware indicates that it succeeded but when the
printer restarts it fails with the same error..

I can only get the printer working again once I have done the Cancel
reset noted above and then get the same error as above.

Contacted HP total care support but my suspicions are that they may not
offer much help beyond the standard boiler plate support.. so far they
haven't disappointed.. :(

Thanks in advance for any info or advice.
