HP Laserjet 1020 problem

I have problems my HP laserjet 1020 printer when I want to print in
network. In the beginning the printer worked in windows domain and
sometimes didn't print at all. When I connected to a local machine it
always worked well. I thought that it was a domain problem and I connected
to a print server, but the problem was equal. I tried the print server
with a HP Laserjet 1022 printer, and it worked perfectly well. It seems
that the printer is good because it can print with Linux and Windows. I
have tried the renew the firmware in linux but but the problem remained.
Is this a laserjet 1020 specific problem ?

One quick thought, it may be a DHCP problem, which
may be cureable by static addressing. Can you give
the printer a static IP address?

It's a host-based printer, so probably not. More likely are inherent
limitations of that type of printer.

HP's specifications page on the LJ1020 says

Connectivity, std.: Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port

The same page for the LJ1022 says

Connectivity, std.: Hi-Speed USB port (compatible with USB 2.0
specifications)

Connectivity, opt.: HP Jetdirect external print server, HP wireless
print server, HP bt1300 Wireless Printer Adapter

The first thing I'd try is using drivers for the 1022 on the 1020. The
hardware might be identical and the 1022 drivers just download different
firmware that can handle an external print server. Although that
probably happens on boot, not during each print job.

Another possibility is replacing that host-based printer with one that
has some built-in brains and is more likely to actually put things on
paper when requested by the user.

Does the router Control Panel list Local Network
Devices and can it see the printer?
Printing will be unreliable if the printer isn't seen
as connected to the local network, or if the
printer keeps getting a new address via DHCP which
is why static addressing might help.

I used static IP, and I could ping it. I wrote this IP to my web browser
and I saw my print server's web management screen. The print server
indicated that the printer is present, and showed the number of jobs, but
the printer didn't print.

I think it is a good idea. I will try using the drivers for the 1022.
Thanks a lot.
