HP Digital Imaging Monitor - system tray, printer

I just got a new HP 4180 printer and I wasn't sure if I should have
the HP Digital Imaging Monitor startup every time. I did notice that
I couldn't scan by pressing a button on the printer - I had to run
one of the HP programs that came with the printer.

I've Googled a lot of suggestions for how to remove the DIM - can't
you just go into Windows Explorer and remove it from the Startup
folder? If you could, I should have seen that suggestion a lot, but
some of them say to go into MSCONFIG and all that.

Certainly if it's in the startup folder you can remove it with no problem.

IF it is in the Startup folder, then sure that's the location to remove
it form.

Okay, but I'm a little confused about using the scanner if that
program is not running.
When it WAS running, I couldn't scan by pressing the Scan button on
the printer.
I COULD scan by using the HP software and clicking on Scan Document.
I'm not clear what the D.I.M. has to do with this.

Perhaps the solution is found at HP tech support. They design the
software to monitor their hardware. We try to help with the XP side of
the coin, which is just what the software got loaded onto in this case.

I have the same printer. It's NOT in the start up folder and there's no
place to not have it load in the program itself. The only way to stop it
from loading is to untick all three HP entries in the start up of
MSCONFIG. You will lose the feature of using the printer/scanner without
using a program on the PC if you do this.

It is in my Startup folder, but only for All Users and not for Owner
or Local User.

It's not in mine but that could be because I removed them from MSCONFIG.
I never use the printer as a stand alone.

Alias,

What exactly can you do (or not do) because the HP D.I.M. is on or
off?

Thanks

You can't use the buttons on the printer if it's off.

Can you just leave the Digital Imaging Monitor off all the time?
I mean, if you are willing to just use the buttons on the HP software
programs.

That's what I do. I just unticked them in MSCONFIG and everything works
like before if I use the computer software to do the tasks. Oh, and I
don't get that little bubble when it's printing that tells you you're
printing, well, duh! Great little printer/scanner for the price, though
and works out of the box with Linux too.
