HP CD Writer Plus causes XP to re-boot

C

Can anyone help? I've recently upgraded from Windows 98 to Windows XP
professional, SP2.
Apart from the usual teething problems with missing drivers etc, I
have one persistent problem that I am finding very difficult to
resolve, which involves my computer falling into a continuous re-boot
loop.
I am reasonably certain that the problem is related to my external CD
writer, an HP CD Writer Plus 7500 series and associated software (Easy
CD creator v3.5, DirectCD and HP Simple Trax).
However, the problems associated with Easy CD Creator and XP are well
documented and I beleive that I have removed all traces of legacy
software. I have also downloaded and installed XP drivers from the HP
support site.

Despite having done this, I find that if the CD Writer is connected to
my PC when switched on it will cause it to go into the continuous
re-boot loop. On removing the D connector from the writer to the PC,
the system recovers and boots properly.

Any ideas how I can fix this?

Buy a new cd burner. Am saying this half seriously as the HP burners are a
mixed bag - models with similar specs are supplied by several manufacturers
and HP slaps an HP label onto them. Because of this, what works for one
person with a 7500 will not work for the next. I hope that you get some
good suggestions and that they work for you. On the other hand, I replaced
my HP burner a few years back and do not regret it.

NOTE: Like yours my HP burner was supplied with an older version of Roxio.
Once XP was installed, XP's burning feature and newer Roxio versions did
not work with the drive consistently. aHead's Nero and InCD worked well
until the unit was replaced.
