Upgrading from 98se to xp home - cd writer

I have adaptec direct cd 2 and easy cd creator 3.5 that came with my
computer. I want to upgrade to xp home and understand that there are
issues with those programs. All I really want is to be able to use the
cd writer to save to. Any thought on the best program or upgrade to do
this?

try to uninstall the softare for the cd. windows should be able to
generically recognize the cd writer and you can write to and from it through
the file manager. you may have to remove the driver and reinstall it through
windows hardware/add if windows doesn't have the driver then you probably
have a driver disk for it on a disk that came with the cd. you may also get
an updated driver either thruogh windows update site or from the adaptec
site.

I use Nero 6
Win XP warns of an incompatibility issue, but that may depend on which
CD/DVD writer you use, I use NEC.

I turn of XP CD writing support & there is no conflict.

If you know how to turn off the autorun feature for CD/DVD do it. No
conflict!

I would go ahead & install those progs & use them. You can always roll
back. (You do use system restore, don't you?

When installing, ignore any signature, etc. warnings from XP, just OK the
install.

Next, go straight to finding driver updates.

Should work OK.

Good luck.

If you have a computer old enough to have come with those antique
versions of DirectCD and Easy CD Creator, you may well encounter other,
much more serious, hardware issues in an upgrade attempt.

Have you verified that all of your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:

You should also take a few minutes to ensure that there are
WinXP-specific device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many models
in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's consumer-class
Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K before it, is quite
sensitive to borderline defective or substandard hardware (particularly
motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will still support Win9x.

Thanks for the info. I did run the upgrade advisor from microsoft and
corrected all the other deficiencies. The direct cd was the only big
problem i had left. If xp has that capability built in to the os i
should be in good shape.
