How to Uninstall NAV

J

John Coutts

Three brand new Dell machines with everything but the kitchen sink loaded,
including a bloated Norton Anti-Virus and XP Pro/SP2. The customer wanted to
use their existing Anti-Virus program, so I was faced with the task of removing
NAV. Every time I attempted to uninstall it, it kept asking for the install CD.
Well, Dell no longer provides the Resourse Disk and the Tools Disk, so how do I
insert the CD.

What I ended up doing was editing the registry to prevent any NAV programs from
auto starting. Then I went into the services window and changed all the NAV
programs from "Auto" to "Manual". Then and only then would it let me uninstall
NAV. What a pain in the Buttocks these freebies are, and what a decrease in
startup time when it is removed. Then I had to shut down the annoying Security
Center service.

FYI - I don't know if this is just an SP2 issue, but when the user logs in, the
OS ignores the BIOS key lock settings. You have to edit the registry:

HKUSERS/.DEFAULT/Control Panel/Keyboard

and change the key InitialKeyboardIndicators from 0 to 2. Then and only then
will it honour the BIOS settings.

Go to Symantec's web site and obtain their product removal tool.
