Removing NAV 2004

To All:

I will be removing NAV 2004 in about 2 weeks and replacing it with
another AV. I have heard that NAV is difficult to remove. A Google
search for "+norton +remove" came up with the following useful links:

How do I completely uninstall Symantec AntiVirus?
http://www.cit.cornell.edu/helpdesk/win/nav/uninstallnav.html

and from Symantec

Uninstalling Norton AntiVirus 2004 or Norton AntiVirus 2004 Professional

Removing Norton AntiVirus 2004 from Windows XP/2000 after Add/Remove
Programs does not work

If anyone in this NG has some additional tips on removing NAV 2004, they
are appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve

NAV leaves a bunch of junk on your HD. They are all safe to delete if
you have no other Norton or Symantec programs such as ACT!, Norton
Utilities or System Works, Ghost and so on.

Symantec has a program that does a pretty good job of removing NAV but
they suggest that you use it only if the NAV uninstaller fails:
RNAV2004.EXE also try SYMCLN.EXE. Additionally go into Control Panel/
Add/Remove Programs and remove Norton/Symantec Live Update and Live Reg.

Look in Program Files/ Common Files/Symantec Shared/ and remove all
Symantec related files (if you have no other Norton or Symantec
programs). Next look in Program Files/Symantec and remove files there
(if you have no other Norton or Symantec programs).

Look in Applications Data folders in the Windows and Documents and
Settings folders. Check under different users.

If you know what you are doing editing the registry, do a search and
clean out the references to Norton Antivirus.

Good luck. BTW, I switched to NOD32 last fall and I've been very happy
with it.

Chas:

On the Symantec site, I found info on RNAV2003 but not RNAV2004? Is the
2004 version available.

Thanks,

Steve

Remove it with it's own uninstaller,... afterwards clean up your
computer with Crapcleaner or Be Clean & a registry cleaner.
http://www.nondisputandum.com/html/system_cleaning.html
That reboot & install the new soft.
Will do it.
Good luck.

Thanks for the info.

My plan was to:

1) Use Add-Remove programs to remove NAV first
2) Use Add-Remove Programs Live Update, etc.
3) Manually remove the remaining files and folders
4) Clean the registry with the jv16 Powertools reg cleaner.

Crapcleaner and Be Clean look like redundant software to me. Do you
have anymore comments.

Thanks again,

Steve

Between steps 3 and 4, run regedit and search for "norton" and
"Symantec". Delete any keys with those words in it (assuming the only
Norton/Symantec product you have on the machine is NAV). I'm not sure
if NAV 2004 has any of these, but you may (or should) delete any
registry keys containing "symevnt" (such as symevnt.386, symevnt.dll,
symevnt1.dll, etc).

It's possible that NAV 2004 will create additional or different
directory names than these, but as part of step 3 you will want to
delete any Norton, Symantec, Symantec Shared, LiveSubscribe, and
LiveUpdate directories (and the files contained therein). There will
usually be a norton or symantec directory inside an "\application
data\" directory.

Thanks for the info.

So you say to clean the registry 1st and then remove files and folders
2nd? I find that the registry cleaner in the jv16 Power Tools is good
at identifying "orphaned" keys from removed files and folders, hence my
decision to remove files and folders before keys.

Any comments?

Thanks,

Steve

I saw reference somewhere to RNAV2004 but I don't recall where. From
your later posts, sounds like you have a good plan.

When I removed NAV from the last system I had it running on, I freed up
over 400MB!

just remove the software, that let a registry cleaner do the job,...

What i said about Crap Cleaner is comparable to simple wipe with a
cloth on a dirty table,.. it will mot remove the deep dirt that nrton
leaves behind. CrapCleaner is ok,.. i use for years Be Clean, but is
looks less smooth & it takes a few seconds longer to run. perhaps some
other people have comments on this soft. Bith are ok, but are less
relevant to remove all Norton leftovers. That's for the registry
cleaner. If you are not experienced, i would not manually remove items
from the registry.

If anything remains, seek for the same list in run > MSCONFIG
look in the various tabs for what points to Norton (the list Steve H
wrote is OK)

But I guess that most will be removed after diversified cleaning with
the tools I wrote about

Yes I've been down this road. It can be very difficult to remove Norton /
Symantec programs. Symantec purposely leaves hidden traces to keep you from
removing the product and then re-installing it to get another year subscription.
