how to install recovery console in SP2

Guest

According to several KB article, such as

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/vinson1.mspx
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...windows/xp/all/reskit/en-us/prmb_tol_kfma.asp

to install the recovery console as a boot menu item, you need to run

x:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons

(where x is the CDROM drive letter where the XP setup CD is).

However, on SP2, when I try this it tells me "Setup cannot continue because
the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD. "

So how is one supposed to install the recovery console in SP2?

Thanks

You need to slipstream your original WinXP CD with the SP2 patch - thus creating a
new WinXP SP2 CD

You install the repair console via a Windows XP CD that has been slip
streamed to include SP2 in the base install. Then you can insert the CD and
perform the install of the repair console - x:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons
(where x = your CD drive).

hi,

i guess you are using the original xp sp1 cd that is whay it happens. while
you have installed xp sp2 you can not use xp sp1 cd. you have to make a
slipstreamed xp sp2 cd and use that to install the recovery console.

how to make a slip streamed sp2 cd:
this is from: Will Denny
MS-MVP - Windows Shell/User

You can download the SP2 file (266 MBs) from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en -
or if you have a copy of the SP2 CD, you can copy the xpsp2.exe file from
that CD onto your hard disk/partition and use that:

then follow the directions in the following article to create a slipstreamed
XP CD:

http://www.msfn.org/articles.php?action=show&showarticle=49

good luck

Yup, that's how I went about installing it. I also highly suggest installing
Bart's PE (http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/) as well as the recovery console,
just because of its added benefits.

Thanks, but what do you do if you do not have a Windows XP CD? My laptop did
not ship with one, just the OEM system recovery CD and application recovery
cd. I don't think this is the same kind of thing.
