how to I change screen width using a data projector

Using a new Dell Latitude D420 laptop with Office 2003. I have used a data
projector for powerpoint presentations at meetinsg and seminars for years.
Using new laptop the image is narrowed when projected and on the laptop
screen. The presentation has not been changed only the image projected.

I have tried resetting the display settings to 800*600 via control panel but
windows defaults back to 1280*800 even after restarting the computer.

Asthe presentations now look "squashed up" the presentation looks
unprofessional, any suggestions to deal with this problem are gratefully
recived.
