How to Create Bootable CD from MSDN ISO Image

D

DBLWizard

Howdy All,

I feel like a real dunce here but I can't seem to create a bootable CD
from the MSDN XP SP2 Image. I have tried using both Nero Burning ROM,
and Sonic Digital Media Home. Both produce a Cd that has all the files
on it but neither of them is recognized by any of my systems as a
bootable disk. Does anybody have any thoughts on this?

With Nero Burning ROM I am using the "Writing" check box and selecting
Disc At Once.

Thanks

Where were you about a month ago. I spent a whole weekend doing this.
Now what image is this? I have the original Windows XP CD (no SPs) and I
streamed SP2 onto the origianl i386 folder and then created a bootable CD on
that image.

I used a program called ISO Buster (I think), to extract the img file from a
bootable MS CD.
Then used that when burning a new CD.

I'll look to see if I saved any notes.

Hi,

If you are referring to the XP SP2 .iso image from MSDN, open Nero and
look for the "Burn image to disk" option, select the downloaded .iso
image and burn it to disk.

Bert that is what I did. I am running v6.6.1.4 of Nero Burning Rom. I
escaped out of the "New Compilation" dialog that comes up when you
start. Then I went to "Recorder" and selected "Burn Image...", Seleted
my ISO file "en_winxp_sp2.iso, checked "Write", checked "Finalize CD"
and selected "Disc At Once" for the Write method, and 10x for Write
Speed, and then clicked "Burn".

The resulting disc is not bootable.

Any other thoughts.

Thanks

This is how I do it with the same version of Nero.

Go to Start - All Programs - Nero StartSmart
Put curser over Copy and Back and select "Burn image to Disc"
Select the .iso file
Check "Verify data on disc after burning"
Click Ok, then next.

If you still have trouble, you may need to try with different brands of
CD-R media, lower write speed or you may be in need of a firmware
upgrade.

Bert,

Which firmware are you speaking of? I have tried this on two different
systems with two different types of CDWriters. One is an HPPavilion
Laptop that was purchased last January, the other is desktop with a
Yamaha CRW2200E. I am using TDK 80 min media. On my laptop the lowest
speed available is 10x and that didn't make any changes. I will have
to wait until tomorrow or friday before I can get some different media
to try.

Any other sugesstions?

Thanks

In this case it very well could be a faulty download. Re-download and
repeat the burning process.

I may end up doing this but my point is that the MSDN ISO's are
supposed to be bootable and I should not have to go through the
Slipstream process. But I have tried this on three different systems
with three different CDWriters now and all with the same result. The
CD is readable brings up the autorun window if inserted into a running
system but none of them are bootable. I have even put in my regular XP
CD and made sure I had the BIOS set correctly to recognize bootable
CD's and it works just fine.

Frustrated.

Hello

If you have Nero v6.6.1.4 then you also have Nero Express that comes with it. Select Nero Express then select make Data CD and then make Bootable CD. That will do the trick for you instead of Nero Burning Rom

When you view the contents of the CD, are you seeing an iso file?
The burning program included with XP, will not burn a bootable CD.

Howdy All,

With Nero Burning ROM I am using the "Writing" check box and selecting
Disc At Once.

I've seen the same thing - many of the ISO images in the MSDN Universal
DVD package (where you get the box of DVD's) are not bootable images,
but they contain a utility that shipped with the OS to create a bootable
set of disks. Not sure about XP ISO specifically, but the Windows 2003
series of ISO's is that way.

You could always just get a boot disk, wipe the drive and start from
there with the CD.

So Daphne,

Then how do you get the files from the ISO into the "Disc Content"
window? Do I have to use something like ISOBuster to get the files out
of the ISO?

Thanks

Hello

That option chosen in Nero Express will convert your ISO files. It does for me
