Image File for Bootable CD ?

chuck

I'm trying to use Nero to burn a bootable WinXP CD.
I have an image file (I think??) on my hard drive
with a .ISO extension, whereas Nero wants it to
be a .IMG extension. Nero sez it's burning a
boot CD, but the CD does not boot.

Que passa??

You must also specify a "boot.bin" file to use and burn to the CD in
order for it to be bootable - unless you're copying the original
WinXP CD to back it up (that CD already has a bootable sector).

Two things,

An Image file is likely to be an image of a complete CD, including
directories, not just the boot sector(s) you need. If you just want to
make it into a CD, use Nero Recorder Menu - Burn Image. You will have
to switch the file types when Nero is opening to all files to see it.

If you want boot sector(s) to go with a new compilation you make, (and
your iso file *may* be just that so you can use it) you select the
source - often a bootable floppy like a Win98 startup disk - in Nero's
BootCD selection, and then make sure if it is not a floppy that you have
the right number of sectors chosen; a boot section extracted from a Win
XP CD needs four. Then add your files to be seen as on the CD after
boot to the compilation in the usual way, then make sure at the burn
stage to check Finalise CD (no more may be written)

If the original image was properly made from a bootable CD, then the
resulting CDR created from that Image will also be bootable. If it's
not, either the creator or the burner did something wrong.

I think you answered a question I want to post, but thought it responsible to
search first.

The Technet Plus subscription comes with WinXP, Server 2003, etc. as I'm
sure you know. But, they don't provide ISO files, just "install" files in a
folder?

How can I combine those files, to a bootable CD, so the CD will boot like an
OEM /Retail disk and proceed with install, ASR, etc.?

I think your answer was close to that, I'm not sure I've grasped all the
steps required.

I have Nero to try things with.
