When I boot up several programs load that I dont want to run. How can I
remove these programs from the startup menu?
In addition how can I stop programs from going and looking for updates every

Hi,
All reputable programs will have an Option or settings to allow or disallow
them from Start Up with windows, so try the configurations Option first.
Then you can take them OFF from here:
C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Start menu\Programs\StartUp = look in the
right Pane/window and remove the Programs/apps you don't want to start up
with the OS.
Also the updates can run if the program(s) running an Update service in
Services control panel, so try to make it/set it to manual instead of Auto.
Then try the Autoruns.exe
HTH.

Click start---run---type in msconfig click startup tab and select/deselect
the programs there.

Go to each program in startup that you do not want to start up automatically
and look in Options, Preferences or whatever for anything that may be
checked against starting up when Windows starts.

Do NOT use MSCONFIG to do this. Unchecking programs in a bid to stop them
installing at start up is bad practice. MSCONFIG should only be used in this
manner to diagnose problems. It should never been seen as the FINAL
SOLUTION..

Please explain your misguided words 'Do not use MSCONFIG' .
Do you know what configure means/is?

Get this...

Either look for the auto-update option in the particular program options
and disable it or get a firewall that can block outbound program
traffic.

I use Zone Alarm

Not edit, add or remove shortcuts in it when appropriate. The issue
isn't the Startup folder but the program that "places itself" there.
Start making your adjustments in the correct location first.

Sorry, by edit I meant add/remove the X's. I modify my system operation
occasionally by
changing what loads on bootup. I fail to see your description of 'correct
location'.
Example: Sometimes I want OE to load on bootup during a week. The following
week I don't.
Simply check or uncheck. Correct location??????????????

There are no X's in the startup folder. In your case you are simply
fiddling with it, or troubleshooting as Mike Hall referred to it. Making
permanent changes should be done in the correct location. Change the
particular programs Options so as to make it reset it's startup
settings, remove the shortcut from the Startup folder in programs, or if
no other method provided by the program, remove it's registry key at
the location pointed to by MSCONFIG.

Don't be dumb. The X's are added or removed from the boxes in
startup (startup tab) for selection. Why do changes have to be permanent?
What OS are you running?

You are talking about MSCONFIG as if it were the Startup folder.
MSCONFIG should be used for diagnosic/temporary changes.

If you want OE to start when Windows starts for a week only, though it is
anybody's guess why you might want this for a week or at all, you copy the
OE icon to your startup folder.

If you want to stop programs from loading at startup, the correct way to do
this is to go into each program and uncheck the facility.

MSCONFIG is and always has been essentially for the purpose of diagnosing
start up issues, and was not designed to be used as a 'general' on/off
switch.
