Removing programs from Startup

I thought I had removed most of the extraneous programs from my Startup file,
but when I login, I literally have to wait about 5 minutes before I can do
anything. All of the programs I thought I removed from Startup still load.
I just checked my System Information file and saw that there are 44 programs
in my Startup file. How can I remove the programs from Startup that I don't
want to load every time I login?

Hi,

Do Start / Run / msconfig / ok.
Select the Startup tab and start un-ticking the checkboxes. If you are
feeling technical, the Autorun utility from Sysinternals will show you what
is starting on your machine.

Hope that helps

What are they? Are you sure some of those are not malware? Here are some
links for dealing with malware.

With the system clean the first step to eliminate startup programs should be
to check in the options for the program you don't want to start and see if
there is a setting to tell it not to run at startup. The next step is to
remove any entries you don't want from the two startup folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

For anything else uncheck their entries in the startup tab of msconfig:
Start | Run | Msconfig | Ok

Another option is to remove the reference to them from one of these keys in
the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

Make sure you have a backup of the registry using a program like ERUNT
before making any changes to the registry.
