How to delete Startup items under Sys Config

D

Denis

I recently removed a program from my computer but when I look at the Startup
tab on System Configuration Utility there is an item there relating to this
program - pointing to *systray.exe file which is no longer on my machine.
Is there a way to remove this entry from the Startup tab altogether? I
realise that it can simply disable the item but then the system goes into
selective startup.

While in the System Configuration utility, check where the unwanted
item actually is, then delete it from there.

It will probably either be a shortcut in the Startup folder on the start
menu or an entry in one of the Run keys in the registry:

1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
2. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
4. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
5. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
6.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServicesOnce
7.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce\Setup

If the item has already been disabled in the registry, look in this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Sharedtools/MSconfig/startupreg

Finding and deleting the reference to the program will remove it from the
MSconfig startup tab.

Without wishing to get into an argument about registry cleaners, why not
try EasyCleaner?

I do NOT touch the registry cleaning option OR the duplicate files
option and I advise you not to.

However, with this FREE, utility it is easy to remove any program from
start up.

Also, the Unnecessary Files facility is very handy, it will remove
temps, old back ups, deleted program files, recently used etc (you can
choose which).

I do not use it to remove cookies because I have a cookie manager and do
not want to delete any automatic logons.

Hi Denis,

That key is generally added via save settings on exit. Either way, it can
be removed here:

Manual Edit:

These values are stored in the Registry. Go to Start/Run/Regedit to access
these keys and values to delete/remove them:

For items that were in the Start menu, Programs, Startup folder:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder.
You'll find a subkey for each disabled item.

For items loaded from the Registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg.
Again, you'll find a subkey for each disabled item.

If the item has been disabled (unchecked), then it wasn't removed at
uninstall because it wasn't where the uninstaller expected to find it:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\services

Added info:
