How to change number of icons on desktop

There are so many options for the looks of the desktop that I find myself
totally confused.

I have a 19" LCD monitor set up for 768 x 1024 pixels, which is just what I
want. Every program has an icon on the desktop. The icons are the right
size and they are arranged as a grid that spaces them in 9 rows of 13 icons
each. I want to change this grid so that the icons are closer together,
allowing me to display 10 rows of 14 each--without changing the size of the
icons or the font size of the titles. I don't want to change the screen
resolution; I just want to reduce the spacing between icons.

How do I go about doing this?

Thank you so very much,

1. Right-click an empty area of your desktop, and then click Properties.
2. Click the Appearance tab, and then click Advanced.
3. In the Item list look for the following 2 items:

Icon Spacing (Horizontal)
Icon Spacing (Vertical)

You will be able to increase or decrease the spacing of the icons there.

If keeping the desktop icons in order is important to you, you will benefit from the following utility that MVP Kelly has written. It will add a "Save desktop icon layout" and "Restore desktop icon layout" to the right click menu on the desktop.

Go to the following website and scroll down to Line 188, right side. Click the "Add save and restore desktop layout to menu" link to download the .zip file. Unzip the file and double click the "iconlayout.vbs file to run the utility. This will add a "Save desktop icon layout" and "Restore desktop icon layout" to the right click context menu for the desktop.
