Locking desktop icons

G

Gus

Hi Group,

Whenever I change my resolution under Display>Properties>Settings
all of my desktop icons get re-arranged. This also happens on a restart
after a crash.

How can I lock the icons so they come back in the same place
each time.

I am using WindowsXP Home SP2 on a stand alone PC.

Hope you can help,
Gus

There are a number of third part utilities which can save/restore the icon
layout

Thanks DL,

I'm surprised that it would require third party apps.
I had found some of those in my search, but I
thought there must be a way to do it natively.

Thanks

Only 'snap to grid' & auto arrange

I've used this program for years and it works great:

http://www.midiox.com/

Click on Desktop Restore.

Hi JD,

I'm just going to Google until I find something that is
right for me. I had a look at Midiox but that seems
like a bit of overkill as all I want is something
to lock my icons for me. Who knows, if I can't
find anything more suitable I may come back to
that.

I've been patiently re-organising my desktop manually
for a long time now so I'm not in any rush. Thanks
to the info from yourself and others I now know
what it is I'm looking for and as we all well know,
the biggest battle with Google, or Help files for
that matter, is knowing what to ask or where
to look in the first place.

Thanks again
Regards
Gus

FWIW, I've used this freebie for years:

http://users.rcn.com/taylotr/icon_restore.html

It doesn't *lock* icons per se, but lets you save your layout and restore it
with a couple of clicks. Doesn't run in the background or anything - just a
dll and a reg entry.
