Screensaver invokes computer lock-up.

My WinXP Home SP2 has recently developed the bad habit of announcing
that it is running but locked up whenever I leave it for any length of
time during which the Screensaver starts up. I cannot recall having
adjusted any setting for this - which I don't want anyway. The
Desktop shows no icons but a window asking for screen-name and
password is displayed.
Nor can I find any setting to return the operation to normal, i.e. a
random keypress restores the Desktop icons.
What is happening please, and how can I return things to normal?
Many thanks.
Robert.

Check the following.

Go to Control Panel and double click on Display.
In Display Properties, click on the Screen Saver tab.
On the Screen Saver tab, make sure 'On resume, password protect' is unchecked.
Note: If you have more than one user account on your machine it will say 'On
resume, show the Welcome screen'.
Click OK.

Good luck

Many thanks Nepatsfan. Your clear answer led me straight to the
problem. The checkbox was in fact checked, though I am certain that I
have never touched it. Renewed thanks. Robert.
