Desktop icon arrangement

I'm running XP Professional, SP 1 & 2. Can't get my desktop icons to stay in
my preferred custom arrangement. Whenever I reboot or restart my computer,
they always return to default. I've searched for help using the installed XP
Help but to no avail. Does anybody know why my desktop icons won't remain as
arranged? This is really annoying...!

I presume you have right clicked on desktop and checked auto arrange is
unticked.

If Lock Web Items on Desktop is checked...
Items can be moved, but they are moved back after reboot.

If Auto Arrange is checked...
The icons are arranged in columns along the left side of your screen.

Right click Desktop | Arrange Icons By |
UNCheck: Auto Arrange
UNCheck: Lock Web Items on Desktop

Auto Arrange
[[Arrange the icons in columns along the left side of your screen.]]

Lock Web Items on Desktop
[[Specifies whether Web content windows or items that *you* have placed on
your desktop are locked in place and can’t be moved. Select the check box to
lock Web content in place. Clear the check box if you want to be able to
move Web content.]]

Hi Wes,
Nope, none of that helped. Icons still return to default. I've tried all
you've suggested. Oddly, when the system boots, there is a brief interval
where the icons appear as I arranged them, then they disappear for a second
and when they return they are in default arrangement. Something's going on
during bootup that reassigns desktop icon arrangements at some point. Can't
figure out why. Any more suggestions?

Yep, Bob, auto arrange is not only unticked, I even used white out on it (I'm
blonde). :)
