How get the "safely remove hardware" icon to display in taskbar

Hi,

I seem to be having problems with the "safely remove hardware" icon that
should appear in the taskbar on my desktop.

It sometimes appears when I plug ina usb device and sometimes doesn't. When
it doesn't it makes it impossible for me to safely remove the usb device in
the recomended manner, by clicking that icon etc. And I'm not too happy about
this, especially when disconnecting my camera.

I have tried to customise the taskbar to make it "always show" but this does
make any difference. It often doesn't show up when it should.

All this is comparison to my laptop where the safely remove hardware icon
always appears in the taskbar even though I have not customised the taskbar
to ask it to do that. But that is fine by me. What I want to fix is my
desktop so that I can get it display that icon when I need it (or even all
the time).

Any suggestions what I can do.

thanks

As a quick workaround, you may want to put that icon on your desktop.
Create a shortcut with the following command:
%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll

Detlev, thanks for the suggestion, I'll try that.

Daniel, no, the iconhas not completely disappeared. It appears when I plug
in my USB flash drive, but doesn't appear when I plug in my camcorder (which
can uses USB 2.0 as well as firewire, the latter of which I don't yet have on
my computer).

I'm thinking it has something to do with having at one point wrongly removed
the camcorder or done something to upset the relation between the camcorder
and the computer. If that is the case, how do I remedy this. For example,
should I reinstall the USB driver for my windows XP SP 2 system and if so,
how do I do that?

thanks

Hey Detlev, dumm question, but how do I run that command you suggested (or
indeed any command? Do I type it into run on the start menu? I'm not too
computer literate....yet. but I intend to learn!

Right-click a blank area of your desktop, click New, Shortcut. Type the
command Detlev pointed to and follow the 'Create Shortcut' wizard
instructions.

Thanks, I now have the safely remove hardware icon on my desktop, which I'll
try tomorrow when I use my camcorder. Now it is bedtime for me in Australia.

In addition to Daniel's reply: Sure, you can run that command via
"Start > Run" also. However, it's more convenient to get the "safely
remove hardware" window by doubleclick on the shortcut desktop icon
when needed. Just follow Daniel's advice, however, in order to avoid
any typo you may want to copy and paste the command rather than typing.
