The "Safely Remove Hardware" Icon no longer appears in right side tray
when an external device is plugged in to a USB or FireWire port..
Is there an easy fix???

Willard,
If it's just the functionality of the 'Safely Remove Hardware'
icon that you need, then you can create a desktop icon that you can use to
safely disconnect removable media such as pen drives. To do this, select a
blank area of your desktop and 'right-click' upon it choosing 'New' and then
'Shortcut'. When the 'Create Shortcut' dialogue comes up, copy and paste
(or carefully type) the following into the box marked 'Type the location of
the item:':

rundll32 shell32,Control_RunDLL Hotplug.dll

....and then click [ok] Choose a name for your new shortcut (like: 'Safely
Remove Hardware') in the next box and click [ok] to finish. This new
shortcut will have a boring blank icon so, if you'd like to give it the
original, right-click on it and choose properties then click on the 'Change
Icon' button. In the 'Look for icons in this file:' box type this (or
browse for the file) C:\WINDOWS\system32\Hotplug.dll and press [ok] to exit
and [ok] to close the shortcut's properties.

You can now use this desktop icon to summon the same dialogue that
'double-clicking' on the Taskbar icon would do.
Hope this is of some help to you while you try to restore the icon proper.
