Hi, all.

I have a couple of XP users in the household, and I want the unattended
PC that has been left open to someone's account to return to the
welcome screen after a few minutes and require all to log in again.
I seem to remember a "On resume, return to desktop" or something
like that in the Desktop settings' Screen Saver area, but I just have
"On resume, password protect", which isn't what I want.

Thanks in advance,
beachnut

Password protect on resume should be the correct option. Did you even try
it?

Go to Control Panel and double click on Power Options.
Click on the Advanced tab.
Put a check mark in the box next to "Prompt for password when
computer resumes from standby".
Click on the Power Schemes tab.
Make sure you've set the computer to go into standby after a
reasonable amount of time.
Click OK.
Now when the computer is left idle for a certain amount of
time, the Welcome Screen will be displayed when the computer
comes out of standby.

While this approach overcomes the limitations imposed through
using the password proteced Screen Saver (the computer is
locked), it does have other issues that have to be kept in
mind. First off, it's really not effective unless all users
have passwords. Next issue, if a second user logs on, decides
to turn the computer off, and ignores the warning about another
user being logged on, any applications that the first user left
running would be closed without saving open files.

Good luck

Yes, I tried it, and it results in a dialog box. I want
it to return to the Welcome screen. Thanks for the
reply.

I think this is heading down the right path, but I don't
want the PC shutting off. I just want to "switch user"
after 5 minutes of inactivity, which will show the Welcome
screen and require logins to reattach to their session(s).

Sorry, but that's the only way I know of to get the Welcome
Screen displayed.

Keep in mind that standby is a low power state, the computer
isn't off. All someone has to do is move the mouse or hit any
key on the keyboard and the PC comes back to life with the
Welcome Screen displayed.

Ahhh, thanks! Yeah, that'd be great, but my desktop shuts off
entirely for standby mode. Maybe there's a setting for that too?

Are you sure you don't have it set to Hibernate? Look in Power
Options and make sure it says Never next to "System hibernates"
on the Power Schemes page. Next, hit the "Save as" button and
give a name to this new power scheme. Click OK twice.

Hi beachnut

If you have:

• Welcome screen enabled
• Fast User Switching enabled
• More than one user (not including the built-in accounts such as
Administrator, Guest, etc.)

you should find the "On resume, password protect" screensaver option
changes to "On resume, return to Welcome screen".

Hope this helps.
