Sudden change - old style logon only for screen saver resume

The old style logon dialog box (Windows 2000?) appears when resuming from the
screen saver. I have "Use the Welcome Screen" & "Fast User Switching"
selected on the user accounts "Select logon and logoff options" dialog.
Indeed the welcome screen appears each time the computer is turned on and
also when I log off.

Until recently, the welcome screen also appeared when resuming from the
screen saver. However now the old style logon dialog box appears instead.
Also the screeen saver tab says "on resume, password protect" where I
would expect it to say "On resume, display welcome screen."

Someone told me in another newsgroup that the old logon dialog box is normal
when there's only one user account on the system. There's only one user
account on my system, but that's nothing new. There's NEVER been more than
one user account on my system. The screen saver used to display the welcome
screen on resume. I can think of only a few recent administrative events on
my PC - the installation of Visual Studio 2005 Professional (an unlikely
cause) and various windows updates. My system has a fully updated Windows XP
installation, including Service Pack 2.

What's going on?

Right click the on the Desktop > Properties > Screen Saver tab, look at
the options there and uncheck the "On resume, password protect" option.

I guess my original question wasn't clear enough. I'm not complaining that I
have to log on when resuming from the screen saver. I'm complaining that I
get the old style logon dialog box instead of the welcome screen. As I said
in my original posting, the welcome screen appears when I initially boot the
system and when I log off.
