How do I stop page breaks from being highlighted with next parag?

In a Word 2007 document, I have a heading on page 2 after a manual page break
on page 1. The heading is in the main part of the document, i.e., not in the
'header' portion.

When the heading is highlighted with a background colour, the page break
also shows up as highlighted, resulting in a coloured bar at the bottom of
the first page.
The only way I can rid of it is to insert a blank paragraph above the
heading on page 2, but that gives an unwanted shuffle down the page.

Is there a way to highlight the page 2 heading without having the page break
highlighted?

You can prevent the background color this way:
Remove the manual page break and apply "Page break before" to your heading
(in 2003 via Format > Paragraph > Line and Page Breaks tab - hope you will
find it in 2007).

In general, it is better to use "Page break before" than inserting manual
page breaks. For example, manual page breaks may also result in empty pages
in a document.

Stop trying to use manual page breaks, which are almost never
necessary. As long as you use manual page breaks, the problem you've
seen has no solution.

Instead, format the heading with "Page break before" (right-click the
heading, select Paragraph, go to the Line and Page Breaks tab of the
dialog, and check the fourth box).

If you want every heading with that style to start a new page, modify
the style to include the "Page break before" setting.
